Our Plan
Our plan for the Ouachita County Training School is a comprehensive roadmap that balances historical preservation with modern functionality. It is designed to ensure that the school remains not just a relic of the past, but a vibrant part of the community’s future. The plan unfolds in four strategic phases, each building upon the last to create a sustainable and dynamic space for education, reflection, and community engagement.
Phase 1: Structural Stabilization
The first priority is to address the critical structural issues that threaten the integrity of the buildings. This includes repairing the gymnasium’s roof, reinforcing weakened beams, and stabilizing the foundation. Our goal is to ensure that all buildings are safe and secure before moving on to more extensive restoration efforts. Preservation specialists will work alongside architects to maintain historical accuracy while incorporating modern safety standards.
Phase 2: Interior Restoration and Modernization
Once the structures are stabilized, we will focus on the interior spaces. Classrooms will be restored to reflect their original layouts, with updates to lighting, flooring, and fixtures that blend historical charm with contemporary needs. The gymnasium will be transformed into a flexible event space suitable for sports, performances, and community gatherings. The cafeteria will be modernized to serve both educational programs and community events, with a focus on nutritional education.
Phase 3: Campus Revitalization
The surrounding grounds will be revitalized to create an inviting, functional outdoor environment. This includes landscaping with native plants, creating outdoor learning spaces, and installing historical markers that guide visitors through the school’s rich history. We also plan to develop accessible pathways and gathering areas to encourage community use and tourism.
Ongoing Engagement and Sustainability
Our plan doesn’t end with restoration. We are committed to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the site through partnerships with local schools, historical societies, and cultural organizations. Educational programs, heritage tours, and community events will keep the school active and relevant. Additionally, we will establish an endowment fund to support ongoing maintenance and programming, ensuring that the site continues to inspire future generations.
