Restoration Project
The Restoration Project is at the heart of our efforts to preserve the Ouachita County Training School. This initiative is more than just repairing old buildings; it's about restoring a piece of history that shaped the lives of countless African American students in rural Arkansas. The gymnasium, once a vibrant center for athletic events, assemblies, and community gatherings, has fallen into disrepair due to decades of exposure to the elements and structural neglect.
Structural Repairs
Our project focuses on critical repairs such as replacing deteriorating support beams, reinforcing the compromised roof structure, and addressing water damage that has weakened the foundation. These repairs are essential not only for safety but also to preserve the historical integrity of the building.
Reviving the Spirit
However, restoration goes beyond physical repairs. We aim to breathe new life into the space, transforming it into a multi-purpose community center that honors the past while serving current and future generations. The gymnasium will host cultural events, educational workshops, youth programs, and local gatherings, reconnecting the community to a site that once served as its beating heart.
Community Involvement
With the support of donors, volunteers, and preservation experts, we are committed to making this restoration a symbol of resilience, pride, and progress. Every brick, beam, and board tells a story—and through this project, we ensure those stories continue to inspire for years to come.
